What is Augmented Reality?

AR stands for Augmented Reality. The technology brings together a recorded real environment with data-generated information, such as graphic elements or sounds. The data-generated information may be imposed on the real environment, or a masking of it. In this way AR can enhance the user’s experience. AR is closely related to the term Mixed Reality although they are not synonyms.

Why use AR?

AR is used a great deal in the gaming industry and a well-known example is the Pokémon Go app, where small computer-animated characters appear in the surrounding environment in real time. Another area of use of AR technology is within the interior design and furniture industry, where the consumer can, for example, try out changing the colour of a wall or, using a smart phone app, position furniture to see what it would look like before the deciding what to buy.
