What is RPA?

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is the virtual (software-based) robot that a business uses to automate business processes, often those that handle large numbers of repetitive tasks.

Through RPA, the company can release its employees from many of the manual workflows, so they can concentrate on their core tasks. Manual tasks can be done faster and more efficiently through RPA, making such an investment cost-effective and efficient.

Why use RPA?

Until now, companies have achieved the same efficiency by investing and integrating other automatic systems, such as a modern ERP system. Unfortunately, these systems alone do not provide full automation. An RPA will be able to further optimize the company’s workflow, providing several improvements through, among other things, reduced costs and more efficient work processes. Although RPA works alone, most experts believe that RPA in the future should be more closely linked to work carried out by employees to create a greater synergy effect.

How does RPA works?

RPA is not implemented as part of the company’s IT infrastructure but put on top of the existing infrastructure. RPA is widely used to perform repetitive and predictable processes, removing the need to develop automation via core systems. This means that the company does not have to change existing infrastructure or systems, and RPA can be implemented much faster. Unlike artificial intelligence (AI) or Enterprise Risk Management systems (ERM), RPA is a far “simpler” type of software. It neither learns on its own nor looks for ways to optimize internal processes. This also makes RPA far less expensive than AI and ERM and therefore often becomes a more attractive alternative for companies in need of such automation.
